About Us

Who We Are

The Hula Journey is the public-facing umbrella for our Hawaiian hula work in Aotearoa. It is the doorway where people first meet us — through classes, performances, workshops, community events and Hawaiian dance theatre productions.

Under The Hula Journey sit our two hālau: Hālau Ka Waikahe Lani Mālie for wāhine, and Hālau Kāhuliwai for kāne. This structure helps students and the wider community understand that The Hula Journey is the home, while each hālau carries its own learning pathway, discipline and sense of belonging.

At the heart of it all, we are a hula family. We teach traditional Hawaiian hula through mele and oli — song and chant — with warmth, respect and aloha. Whether someone comes to move, learn, reconnect, perform or grow in confidence, The Hula Journey is a place where hula is taught with meaning, care and cultural grounding.

Our Purpose |
Ko Mākou Kuleana

Our purpose is to perpetuate and educate our students in Hawaiian culture through hula, mele and oli — dance, song and chant.

We are here to encourage growth, confidence and leadership in our community, while honouring the traditions and teachings passed down through our hula lineage.

Within our hālau, hula is not treated as performance alone. It is a cultural practice, a discipline, a way of carrying story, genealogy, place, emotion and respect.

We teach our haumāna (students) to move with grace, empowerment and meaning — while understanding that every mele has a story, every gesture has intention, and every dancer has a responsibility to respect their learnings.
